I had similar problems with my Pontiac Vibe and last month. Try getting a free auto warranty quote and see if you can get the policy before you need to get your car repaired.

Most people that are really into cars, not mechanics... would pass the ASE test with no prep. It's pretty much a joke among automotive enthusiasts. On the other hand, if you don't know anything about vehicles you'd need to study or do some training.

Good luck because you're going to have to wade through a sea of myths, misunderstandings and flat out ignorance, friends or no friends.

O.J.T. - on the job training! I learned everything I know about cars by diving right in. Most of the time, if I have never done it before, I would go and buy the Chiltons or Haynes manual for the model car I was working on. Some of the more sophisticated electronics require a specialist, which takes you back to the ASE training. It can be very expensive and you might need a sponsor to enroll, but the pay goes up at garages relative to the amount of training you have. So if you plan to work in a shop you might seriously consider enrolling.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck!
