Is this a fair amount to pay for car maintenance?

Jackie S asked: Is $390 a fair price to pair for new inner tire rods and labor??
How about $279.10 for new brake pads? I drive a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant.

they have to align the tires when they change the tie rods so probably so. I would hope the brake estimate would include high quality brake pads on all 4 wheels.
Brake pads are pretty easy to do yourself but you need to be familiar with how things are supposed to look. You would need to inspect your rotors, they may need to be turned. You would need to inspect your brake lines and make sure they are good and you may have to bleed your brakes.
Sounds pretty reasonable if the brake job includes front and rear. MAKE SURE to tell the mechanic that you want them to give you the old parts when you go to pick the car up. You should always do this when paying for repair work to avoid being a victim of repair fraud. When you get back home, you can go ahead and toss the parts out.
Good price for the tie rods, BAD price for the brakes.
why dont you ask a place that does just brakes,, what pads would cost. if that is just pads i think it is high. pads are not expensive and are easy to do.
Did you hit something? You probably don’t need those tie rods unless you hit something, tie rods aren’t a wear item and don’t just wear out. If you actually need them, which I doubt, $390 is a little high but not outrageous.
Can’t say that for the brake pads though, that price is ridiculous. I just bought new Monroe ceramic pads for my Mustang and my wife’s Eclipse, priced new rotors at the auto parts store too. I can get rotors for under $30 each and the pads were on sale, $32 pad sets with $15 mail in rebate, what a great deal. That’s right, if you’re actually only getting pads done and not rotors, it was $15. Pads are barely more work than changing a flat tire to the spare tire. Monroe’s an actual brand too, good luck getting a “brand name” pad from the brake shop on the corner. Pads and rotors are an easy job, should be well under a hundred for install if you were having it professionally done or about an hour and a half to do yourself. So, if you’re actually getting just pads done for $279, yeah, I’d say that’s about $250 too much.
I bought my stuff from Rockauto.com, great prices and crazy fast shipping. Even if you use that shop for your install you’ll save well over a hundred bucks by picking up higher quality parts online.
