The maintenance indicator. The oil change places naturally want you to come back as often as possible to keep their profits up so they perpetuate the old "3000 miles/3 months" advice. The Honda system tracks the "wear" on your oil based on your driving habits and the environmental conditions, which should be better than a decades old rule of thumb.

Most service centers, especially the oil change places, will put on a next service date or mileage well before what is called for in the owner's manual. Read the manual and schedule things by that.

I asked someone at an oil change place what was wrong with his oil that it was only good for 3,000 miles and he said nothing. I said the manufacturer says it only needs to be changed every 4,000-5,000 miles and you are telling me yours will only last 3,000. He didn't have an answer.
