What are the things to be taken care for the car, before setting off on a long journey?

How do I learn about car maintenance and repair?

I would also like to take a cross-country trip and so would like to be able to at least diagnose problems that I have with cars, as well as do basic maintenance and repairs. How to go about acquiring these skills? I don’t really have any acquaintances who can teach me, so that’s not a possibility. Thanks…
