What do I need to know about buying a used car?

theaterflicka asked: I am looking to buy my first used car – my old one was a hand-me-down from my parents. I’d like to get a semi-nice car (hopefully a hybrid because I’d like to be environmentally friendly) – what should I know in order to get my car at the best price?

get the vin number off the dash on the drivers side and get a carfax report off the internet. dont listen to the person whom you are buying this car from!!! also the least amount of previous owners the better.

You should find a Certified Mechanic that has good knowledge about hybrids. They have an entirely different program than straight gas engines.

You seem young, with not much money, but I don’t know.. Are you sure you can afford a hybrid? They are like over 20K.

Anyway, a great alternative and is enviro friendly is the HONDA FIT. Base model is $12,500.00.. Buy Brand new – your better off.. This car gets 39 MPG highway… I’m buying one ASAP…

Get a friend that is knowable about cars to check out the car and tell you if it is worth the cash. Also, stay away from the hybrids. They can be VERY expensive. Apart from their base price, maintaining them can be pricy also. My 94 Saturn gets close to the same mileage (better mileage = more environment friendly) as the new hybrid cars and was $1,000.

    STAY AWAY FROM THE HYBRIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
