just the original stuff, like plugs, plug wires, change the oil and filter, pcv valve, air and gas filter, grease the front end, check all brakes, check all fluids. ill tell you what to do, go to auto zone and pick up a haynes book on your car, it will tell you everything you need to know about your car.

The first thing I would do would be to make sure sure the odometer is working correctly, because 40K miles on a 14 year old car is unusually LOW miles on a car that old (less than 3000/year).

To answer your question directly:
1. change the oil every 3,000-4,000 miles using quality oil in the correct weight for the car, and use good quality filters.
2. change the air filter every 2nd or 3rd oil change.
3. check all other fluids regularly
4. check your tire pressure often (helps save a lot on fuel)
5. run a bottle fuel injector cleaner through it about once a month
6. rotate tires every 8,000-10,000 miles
7. if something seems "not right" with the car, get it checked out immediately before something breaks. Breaks usually cost more to fix.
8. change the timing belt every 60,000 miles

(The list goes on and on. Go to your local auto parts store and pick up a Haynes Manual for your vehicle. It will list all the required maintenance for your vehicle, and show you step by step how to repair most problems.)

Good luck with your new vehicle.

do regular oil changes every 3000 to 5000 miles
keep up on fluids and belts
dont beat it to hell
keep good tires on it and well inflated
change air filter when needed
do regular tune ups when needed for the car (oil, brakes, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, cabin filter)
fuses
Sea-Foam the engine when it gets to 100,000 (cost about $10)

and for the ac
get it checked, it could just need to be recharged or it might need a new AC unit or compressor and so on.
good luck and keep up on maintenance and it will last for a good time!
