The Toyota Prius appears to be the one of choice, but I will reserve judgement until I see the results of a test that started yesterday.
CBS started with one in California and with some kind of Ford I think it was in Pittsburgh, and the will meet up somewhere in between.
At the end of Day 1 the Toyota had the better figures.

Check out the 2009 Prius, it does it better for longer and for less plus the subtle body style changes really wake it up!

Well some people have suggested the Chevy Volt. If you're willing to wait until 2010 to buy a new car, the Volt will be one among many great options:

Right now you're correct that the Prius is the best option available. It's the cheapest hybrid, has the best fuel efficiency, has the highest customer satisfaction of any car at 92%, and is the greenest car on the planet.

The honda insight would be my choice. It was the first hybrid in the US. It gets significantly better mpg then the prius in normal driving conditions without any modifications done to the vehicle its self.

I like the Chevy Volt, which hopefully will be released in 2010! It plugs into an electrical outlet in your garage to charge, and the first 40 miles or so that you drive off that charge, you're car won't use any gas at all!!!!
