Most modern diesel cars like VW are way better than they used to be. Quieter, and more powerful. My friend has a big heavy Mercedes diesel and he goes much farther than a gasoline engine car of the same size. As long as you do the regular maint on a diesel, there's no reason for it not to run forever. Just make sure to change all filters regularly and dont contaminate the fuel with water and change the oil when you should. The only bad part about diesel engines is that IF they need repairs it can be more expensive. Injector pumps cost quite a lot if one were to fail. IMO, I think Deisels are more troublefree.
